Grand National 2013

Post by upduck on Thu Feb 14, 2013 2:34 pm

The weights for the 2013 Grand National have been announced......

This year's weights are headed on 11st 10lb (rated 162) by the mercurial but hugely-talented Tidal Bay(16/1), who boasts three wins over hurdles and fences at Aintree. After saddling 52 beaten horses in the John Smith's Grand National, Tidal Bay's handler Paul Nicholls finally saw his luck change last year when Neptune Collonges prevailed.
The Ted Walsh-trained Seabass, who finished third in last year's John Smith's Grand National, has been allotted 11lb 2lb in the 166th running of the great chase.

Tip: There are five factors that all 10 of the last Grand National winners have in common...

1. Officially Rated 138-157
2. Won at least over 3m
3. At least one top 3 finish in last 3 runs
4. Between three and six starts since August
5. Won a chase worth at least £29,000

Only 15 horses entered meet all five of these criteria!!!

To whittle the numbers down even further:

1. 8/10 carried no more than 11st 1lb
2. 8/10 were aged nine or ten

And that leaves just 6 horses entered who meet all seven of the statistics:

Colbert Station
Tofino Bay
Bostons Angel
Chicago Grey

Is the winner one of them???

for me the statistics i look at are:

1.avoid horses who raced at the cheltenham festival
2.only bet on 9-10 year olds unless the ground is relatively soft in which case 11 year odls can be considered
3.horses who like to race prominently
4.horses who are in at least their 3rd season of steeplechasing
5.horses who have a bit of quality ie. they arent necessarily graded horses but arent far off as these horses tend to win it these days

mind you cant be bothered to work out who fits these trends haha

Thanks for the tips upduck, Patrick ... For 'general' races, I tend to look at things like;

1) does this horse like this course?
2) has this jockey ridden this horse well before?
3) how long has the trainer had the horse, and does he produce horses that win at this course?
4) how old is the horse - i like them with a bit of experience (but not OAP's) Razz
5) has the horse started wearing goggles recently?
6) has the horse had too long a rest?
7) has the trainer / owner moved the horse into a new distance?
Cool how much weight is that horse carrying, and when its heavy, i prefer jockey's with weight allowances
9) does the jockey, trainer or owner have a bizarre/humurous name? Wink
